Wim Vanlessen is a celebrated ballet dancer with a career spanning twenty-five years. Knighted Chevalier in the order of Leopold in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the cultural arts in Belgium, he has been an international ambassador for dance representing the Royal Ballet Flanders—on and off the stage.
Vanlessen has received much media attention for his outstanding performances in the classical and neoclassical repertoire, including Balanchine’s and Forsythe’s work. His range is wide and versatile. Having worked closely with world-renowned choreographers, such as Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, he has developed and created principal roles in many great ballets, resulting in a large and broad network within the ballet world and beyond. He was recently chosen to dance the lead role in Bejart’s masterpiece Bolero, Spartacus from the legendary Grigorovich, and Giselle by Akram Khan.
In 2019, Dance Europe Magazine named Wim Vanlessen dancer of the year. Wim is also the author of the book Dancer. Part memoir, part visual history, this acclaimed publication traces the arc of his life and career, developing his aesthetic brand and documenting his passion for movement, fashion, and photography.
A well-respected judge at dance competitions world-wide, Vanlessen has himself been awarded numerous prestigious honors. He is frequently invited to appear as guest dancer and teacher for master classes around the world. Besides his artistic talent, Vanlessen is a well-respected public figure who is often seen on national television. His strong communication skills and natural ability to connect with an audience have made him a popular public speaker. Wim has spoken to groups large and small who want to learn from his remarkable discipline, work ethic, and leadership.
